Abstract

Abstract A high-power free electron laser (FEL) is being designed in collaboration with Jefferson Laboratory, University of Maryland and Advanced Energy Systems. The proposed system consists of a superconducting accelerator with energy recovery, a relatively short undulator, and a short-Rayleigh length resonator with cryogenic mirrors. Multi-mode simulations are used to study the effects of varying the electron bunch charge, beam radius, number of undulator periods, Rayleigh length, and cavity losses. New design parameters are proposed to reduce the system size and enhance the output power while minimizing the potential for mirror damage. PACS codes: 41.60 Cr
