Abstract

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare, progressive cerebrovascular disease of unknown etiology characterized by irreversible stenosis or occlusion of the anterior intracranial circulation. As a result, moyamoya vessels form in the brain. Magnetic resonance angiography is used as a noninvasive option to diagnose MMD, but cerebral angiography is required to confirm the diagnosis. MMD presentation might be subtle and challenging to identify. Nurse practitioners should consider this diagnosis in patients showing any symptoms of MMD and make the appropriate referral to a neurosurgeon. It is essential to identify MMD cases early because it can be fatal if left untreated.
