Abstract

Mount Emei Scenic Area, including the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area, is located in south-central Sichuan Province. With the remarkable natural landscape and the culture of Chinese Buddhism combined harmoniously, Mount Emei ranks among the four most sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism. Standing opposite Mount Emei, the Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area is located in Leshan City, 31 km east of Mount Emei. The giant Buddha is carved out of a mountainside cliff that overlooks the confluence of three rivers, the Dadu, the Qingyi, and the Minjiang. The Giant Buddha of Leshan was carved in the 8th century and is one of the largest carved stone Buddhas in the world.
