Abstract

ABSTRACT A probe is described for measurement of integrated radon concentrations in the surface soil gas. The design is optimized for reliable and efficient use at a competitive price in prevailing local conditions of North-West Yugoslavia. Experience in field use showed that moisture collection on the surface of the solid state nuclear track detector was practically avoided, even under unfavorable weather conditions during exposure. A PVC foil 15μm thick was used to eliminate signals from thoron gas. Laboratory experiments showed that the efficiency for222Rn was reduced by only about 17 %, while the efficiency for thoron was negligible.
