Abstract

Summary We modify Garfield’s rectangle to devise a simple method of generating arctangent identities. We use it to prove an arctangent identity by Robert Simson. We also explore other applications of this method, including an expression for the infinite sum of the arctangents of the inverse of the even indexed Fibonacci numbers in terms of the golden ratio.
