Abstract

This paper discusses the modeling and presents the digital computer simulation results of a study on the HVDC-turbine generator dynamic interaction. The link is known as Fenno-Skan HVDC, which is rated at 500 MW, 400 kV monopolar. There are 12 pulse thyristor converter/inverters at each end. The thyristor bridges are computer controlled with constant current/constant extinction angle control strategies. There are other various types of controls incorporated in the system as described in the paper. Since the inception of the d.c. link in 1989 by ABB (Sweden), problems from torsional vibrations of turbine shafts in the Olkiluoto turbine generator have been reported by the plant operating personnel during a.c. line-switching operations. However, normal operation of converters is considered in the modeling and analysis.
