Abstract

A microscopic birefringence measurement is proposed to detect optical anisotropy in microscopic area. The stress from industrial processes and molecular orientation are detected by visualizing birefringence distribution. An analytic algorithm with local-sampling phase shifting is employed for achieving a high resolution. The error caused by the initial birefringence of the optical system is corrected by subtracting the in-phase vector. A Berek compensator is used for accuracy check. We demonstrate our method by measuring the cross section of an optical disk made from plastic, and a bio-sample. In our experiments, we were able to obtain a precision of ±0.2°.
