Abstract
A review is given of current research on the nature of microscopic mechanisms of metal fatigue. The topics include cyclic hardening and saturation, persistent slip bands in single- and multiphase materials, trans- and intercrystalline fatigue crack initiation and propagation and related threshold phenomena. Experimental observations demonstrating the important effects of microstructure on fatigue behaviour are surveyed and discussed. The need for fundamental studies under (simple) well-characterized conditions is emphasized.
