Abstract

Abstract This work quantitatively measured the micromixing efficiency in the Kenics static mixer at Reynolds number ranging from 66–1,020 on the basis of a unique parallel competing reaction scheme proposed by Villermaux et al. Employment of the Kenics static mixer initiated early transition to turbulent flow. Furthermore, the mixer could markedly enhance the micromixing efficiency in both the laminar and turbulent flow regimes when compared with that in an empty tube. The mixing times data estimated according to an incorporation model substantially decreased with increasing Reynolds number, and ultimately reached a low level of 10 −3 s in the turbulent flow regime. The present static mixer could yield better micromixing efficiency than that in a continuous-flow stirred tank reactor (CSTR) at the same power consumption rate.
