Abstract
This article analyzes the role that outside funding plays in the activities of two types of Mexican‐American political organizations. The first type includes the largest and best known Mexican‐American public interest organizations: the National Council of La Raza, the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. The second type is the Texas Industrial Areas Foundation network of grassroots organizations. I find that all are greatly influenced by their dependence on external support. Gifts and grants underwrite these groups, but only when they pursue political activities favored by corporations, foundations, and wealthy individuals.
