Abstract
The article is devoted to theoretical and practical aspects of the methodology for the formation of functional literacy in English lessons. To solve this problem, a review of such educational tools as pedagogical cues is proposed. The practical application of various cues for the formation of specific elements of functional literacy is described. The competencies that need to be improved by future teachers as part of their own training and self-education are given. The connection of functional literacy with the basic skills of future specialists of the 21st century is described. Their development within the technology of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) is proposed
