Abstract

The paper deals with two case histories of failures as practically experienced in the R.S.A. mining industry by an in-house Research & Development Organisation of a major mining house. The first case history deals with premature failure problems experienced with a high energy output hydraulic rockdrill from a major mining equipment supplier. Attempts to overcome the failure problem (which is essentially one of fretting corrosion with possibly some cavitation) are described in full and the results obtained to date analysed. The second case history deals with the failure of raise borer drill rods. Although reamer stems and stabilisers fail occasionally, drill pipe failures are rarely experienced. During 1976 a number of drill rod failures were experienced both in R.S.A. and elsewhere, which led to a series of investigations. The results of these investigations in so far as they are relevant and determination of the probable cause of failure are described.
