Abstract

It is time for me to retire as Editor of Psychomusicology. This is not to say that I have lost interest in Psychomusicology (or research in music perception and cognition!). It simply means that I have found new interests in my retirement years that I wish to pursue (I retired from the College of Music at Florida State University in 2001). Certainly, music research will always remain important to me, and I plan to continue spending time in thinking and writing about music perception and cognition, and perhaps I will undertake an occasional research project. 1 have been a member of Psychomusicology's Editorial Committee since its inception in 1981, having taken over the Editorship in 1994. I have been honored to serve the Journal for some 26 years, and it has been especially rewarding to work with Psychomusicology's outstanding Committee Members. I wish to thank them for their fine service in making the Journal a first-class voice for music cognition research. Likewise, my expression of gratitude goes to past Editors and Associate Editors James Carlsen, Jay Dowling, Randall Pembrook, Robert Sidnell, Thomas Tunks, and David Williams. These gentlemen have been exceptional editors and leaders throughout the history of the Journal. Dr. Annabel Cohen (BA McGill, MA, PhD Queen's University), a long-time member of the Editorial Committee, has agreed to serve as Psychomusicology's Editor, beginning with the next Volume (20). Professor Cohen serves on the faculty of the Psychology Department at the University of Prince Edward Island, and holds an Adjunct Position at Dalhousie University, in Nova Scotia. She has been a member of Psychomusicology's Editorial Committee since 1991, and was Guest Editor for two outstanding Psychomusicology volumes: The Psychology of Film Music (Volume 13) and The Psychology of Music and Aging: Psychogeromusicology (Volume 18). Dr. Cohen is widely published in the music psychology area and is one of its most active and strongest supporters. She serves on the editor rosters of several other related scholarly journals. I am very pleased that Dr. Cohen will become the next Editor. I know that Psychomusicology will prosper under her leadership. Dr. Cohen has invited two internationally known scholars, Dr. Bruno Repp and Dr. Lauren Stewart, to serve as Associate Editors of Psychomusicology. Dr. Repp (PhD Vienna, PhD Chicago) is a Senior Researcher Haskins Laboratory in New Haven, Ct. He is the author of over 150 publications, over a third of these in music perception and cognition. He is the former editor of Language and Speech (1988-94), and a past Associate Editor of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (1984-86; area of Speech Perception). He serves as a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, Perception and Psychophysics, & Music Perception. He is an NIH grant recipient and brings special expertise in several areas of music perception: rhythm, emotion, performance, and memory. …
