Abstract
THE replication of several DNA viruses including Marek's disease herpesvirus (MDHV) is largely dependent on the presence of arginine in the medium1–5 . By using fluorescent antibody (FA) techniques, the membrane or surface antigens induced by several viruses, including poxvirus6–8, polyoma virus9, Epstein-Barr virus10, 11, herpesvirus type 1 (ref. 12), MDHV (refs 13–15) and turkey herpesvirus15, have been found on the surface of cells and seem to be distinct from viral structural antigens (VSA). The characteristics of the membrane antigens (MA) induced by some of these viruses6, 8, 11, 15 except herpesvirus type 1 (ref. 12), were that they appeared on the surface of infected cells as an early product of the viral genome and that DNA inhibitors did not prevent their formation, whereas protein inhibitors did so completely.
