Abstract
In the contemporary world, fitting with the beauty standards set by society has become increasingly important. The pursuit of ideal beauty may cause emotional imbalance and is usually achieved with extreme, unhealthy methods, eventually causing eating disorders, particularly among adolescents. This article aimed to evaluate the results of the collected data, which were processed, analyzed and presented according to their quantitative and qualitative variables, demonstrating the cause and effect of the impact of overeating and restrictive eating in this age group. In this context, this research assessed the data from 200 respondents between 12 and 22 years old regarding their eating habits and possible changes. The study was carried out in the second half of 2021, using a Google Form survey with structured questions prepared by the researchers. Women present more behaviors related to eating disorders, especially binge eating (8.4%) and vomiting, use of medication and/or fasting (40%). Major triggers for binge eating are problems during adolescence (52.7%), stress during university entrance exam (49.9%), and dysfunctional family relationships (30.5%). Women and adolescents appear to be more susceptible to develop eating disorders due to the pressure to meet beauty standards.
