Abstract

The kinetics of the dissociation of the malonatobis(phenanthroline)cobalt(III) ion in aqueous hydrochloric acid media (0.5–2.5 M HCl) has been investigated spectrophotometrically. The observed dependence of the rate on various acidity functions suggests a dissociative mechanism involving the protonated complex. Values of the kinetic activation parameters (in 1 M HCl: ΔH≠, 21.6 kcal/mole; ΔS≠, −10.5 e.u.) also appear to be consistent with this mechanism.
