Abstract
Quartz is known to be ferrobielastic; that is, quartz crystals have domain states (Dauphine twins) which differ in their elastic compliance values and which can be switched by an appropriately oriented stress. Polycrystalline quartz has also been reported (Tullis 1970) to show preferential orientation of these domains following application of large uniaxial stresses.
