Abstract

The ultimate strength of carbon nanotips prepared by electrochemical etching of fibers reinforced with multiwall carbon nanotubes has been determined on samples loaded with a strong electric field in a field-ion microscope. The nanostructural fibers were obtained by catalytic chemical vapor deposition of carbon. The phenomenon of strengthening was observed for carbon nanotips loaded to a level close to the theoretical ultimate strength of high-modulus fibers.
