Abstract
Currently, measures of parent-school involvement do not consider structural racism, and current measures of critical consciousness (CC) include multiple forms of oppression without a focus on any in particular. This paper outlines the development and validation of The Black Parent Measure of Critical Consciousness in Education (BPMCC-E) and assesses Black parents’ analysis of educational inequities and their critical parent engagement. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were run to evaluate the proposed scale. Five internally consistent factors were found suggesting various dimensions that may capture differences in how Black parents critically analyze their children’s schools and engage in that space.
