Abstract

The lithium-drifted germanium detector's high resolution provides an opportunity to measure the photoelectric, Compton, and pair-production cross sections as a function of photon energy in the range of 100 to 2750 keV. This conceptually simple experiment can be readily performed in an undergraduate laboratory equipped with a small Ge(Li) detector and pulse-height analysis equipment. Results compare very favorably with theoretical calculations.
