Abstract

The carbon/metal ratio, x, was measured at several points in a single grain ofTiCx 1 μm in diameter in a nickel-bonded composite, TiC /Ni-Mo, by electron energy loss spectroscopy. Cross sections for inner-shell ionization of Ti and C were taken from elemental film values. A value of x=0.81 ±0.02 was obtained at the center of the grain. This result is significant for interpreting mechanical properties of the material, as they should depend on x.
