Abstract

Oxide ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are promising materials for extreme application environments where high temperatures combined with mechanical loads under oxidative or corrosive conditions are required. Oxide ceramic matrices must be developed to build composites that fulfill these requirements. This article disserts on the aspects of sol-gel processing and freeze gelation most important for their application in the production of ceramic matrix composites. Several methods for matrix infiltration and preform fabrication are also discussed, with a focus on the filament winding technique. Finally, the final properties of materials prepared via the filament winding and freeze gelation techniques is demonstrated.
