Abstract

An overview of the electronic band structures of elemental semiconductors is presented, emphasizing the role of symmetry in determining their qualitative aspects. Their relation to the optical spectra and photoemission data is discussed. Besides Si and Ge, which have an indirect gap, a few other examples of semiconductors with a “zero-gap” or a direct gap are illustrated.
