Abstract

After a sharp decline in 2009, the value (in current prices) of exports of leather (SITC group 611) recovered for the past two years but suffered a decrease of 1.5 percent and amounted to 23.7 bln US$ in 2012 (see tables 1 and 2). Reported imports also showed a decline of 2.7 percent and amounted to 22.7 bln US$ for the year (see tables 1 and 3). Graph 1 compares the decrease in exports in 2012 for this product group with the decrease in world exports of manufactured goods classified chiefly by material (SITC section 6) of 4.7 percent and the increase in total world exports of 0.3 percent. Exports of leather (SITC group 611) accounted for 1.1 percent of world exports of SITC section 6 and 0.1 percent of total world exports in 2012 (see table 1).
