Abstract

Collection, treatment and disposal of domestic wastewater in Japan is introduced as a case study. Three systems, namely (1) sewerage system, (2) night soil collection and disposal system, and (3) individual sewage disposal tank (ISDT) system, are used to reduce organic loading originating from domestic source. Night soil is treated by any of these three systems, but miscellaneous wastewater, which contributes to water pollution more than night soil, is treated only by sewerage system and part of ISDT system. Anaerobic digestion plus activated sludge, and aerobic treatment with nitrogen removal are discussed as two typical treatment processes of night soil. Other management methods of human wastes for resource recovery are also discussed.
