Abstract

Acute appendicitis is one of the most prevalent entities worldwide and surgery is the preferred treatment to address the situation. Although mortality rates have decreased over the years, morbidity is still present. Complications may arrise in the postoperative course, such as surgical site infection (SSI), intra-abdominal abscess (IAA), incisional hernias, ileus, bowel obstruction, bleeding or stump appendicitis. The correct identification and management are fundamental to prevent long-term complications and no to alter the quality of life. In this review we describe the prevalent complications post-appendectomy and explore the possible strategies to solve them considering the available resources in patient care.
