Abstract

Education in Malawi is governed by the Education Act of 1962. A new act is in the process of preparation. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) is mandated to ensure the provision of primary, secondary, and teacher education and provision of technical and vocational education. The government through annual financial subventions provides for university and polytechnic education. The Ministry of Women and Child Development is responsible for pre-primary education and the adult literacy program. The private sector is currently active in the provision of pre-primary, primary, secondary, and university education.
