Abstract

This article presents an electric circuit model of a magneto-electric (ME) dipole antenna based on the composite right/left-handed transmission lines (CRLH-TL) structures. The proposed structure has the infinite wavelength propagation characteristics of CRLH-TL that form the combined magnetic and electric radiators. The ME dipole antenna is travelling wave in nature and its operational frequency depends on the unit cell size and the equivalent transmission line model parameters of the CRLH-TL. The antenna is composed of large number of unit cells and covers the 2.5–9.5GHz bandwidth for a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) less than 2. The simulation results of ME dipole antenna has a flat insertion loss of less than 1dB and return loss better than 10db. Hence the proposed ME dipole antenna is more suitable for ultra wide band applications also outperforms the rectangular patch antenna in terms of the operating frequency range.
