Abstract

The magnetic entropy change of (Gd1−xDyx)5Si4 compounds is investigated by measuring the magnetization as a function of temperature. With the increase of the Dy content, the Curie temperature decreases linearly from 338 to 140 K, but the magnetic entropy change in low magnetic fields (<10 kOe) retains a high value. This suggests that the (Gd1−xDyx)5Si4 compounds are promising candidates for composite magnetic materials which may be used in the active magnetic regeneration (AMR) refrigeration near room temperature in low magnetic fields.
