Abstract

The recent progress in the study of high-spin magnetic observables in medium and heavy nuclei is reviewed. The electron scattering measurements of elastic high multipolarity magnetic scattering have mapped various aspects of nuclear spin-magnetism in the ground state. When using the precise radial information and the occupancy α of the unpaired nucleon wave function in a reanalysis of single nucleon transfer reactions, a large fraction of the sumrule strength of spectroscopic factors appears to be missing. This may have an impact on the usual assumptions about the strength of ground-state correlations in nuclei. However, the effect of meson exchange currents on the spin operator must be evaluated in detail before a clear picture may emerge.
