Abstract

The optically transparent ceramics (OTCs) of CaF2:Mn were fabricated by a vacuum hot-press method. Photo-luminescence (PL) and radio-luminescence measurements were carried out on CaF2:Mn OTCs to study the effect of processing on the luminescence properties of the material. The temperature dependence of PL and decay kinetics was investigated down to 77K. The results were compared with the reported luminescence properties of CaF2:Mn single crystals. The comparison shows that the luminescence is similar at room temperature; however, the evolution of luminescence with temperature and decay mechanism of Mn2+ centers in OTCs is quite different. A possible explanation for the differences in the luminescence properties of CaF2:Mn OTC has been proposed.
