Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present an analytical timeline (with didactic purposes), specifically for researchers interested in the external relations of the Southern Common Market, with special emphasis in the last 15 years. We list the negotiations developed, the agreements reached and its major developments, regarding the trade liberalization program eventually adopted. The regional bloc's external relations are examined in four distinct spheres, but interrelated, which will be: the multilateral sphere under the auspices of the World Trade Organization (WTO); the hemispheric sphere, regarding the negotiations for the establishment of the Free Trade Area of the Americas, the intra-zone sphere, with respect to arrangements with the other member countries of the Latin American Integration Association, under which MERCOSUR is considered a sub-regional scheme integration and, finally, the extra-zone sphere, in which the negotiations with all other trading partners are developed.
