Abstract

Due to their low thermal expansion, some ceramic and glass-ceramic materials are of interest for applications which need dimension stability during temperature variation or special thermomechanical behavior such as a high thermal shock resistance. This paper presents some theoretical considerations which explain the origin of low thermal expansion and its importance. It also presents an overview of ceramic and glass-ceramics which are well known for their low thermal expansion. Their main characteristics, fabrication processes, and well known or potential applications are described.
