Abstract

This paper suggests that the second, third and fourth fascicles of Manuscript 10131 from the National Library of Spain were copied at a later stage than the first and fifth ones. Codicological and textual evidence is provided to support this claim. A codicological analysis shows that earlier and later parchments are of different type. Textual evidence is found in information included in the proem and index of the manuscript as well as in an abrupt beginning of the work. This is suggestive of textual amendments made on some fascicles. Importantly, after assembling the fourth fascicle — which was amended — and the fifth one, no information was lost and no differences in handwriting have been identified. Thus there are no textual indicators of amendment in the transition between the two fascicles. Amendments of this type required careful and tactful treatment. For this reason, only the most dexterous copiers got involved, using different techniques to do their work.
