Abstract

There is an overwhelming prevalence of mental health struggles for midwives and midwifery students in the current workforce.1 Most concerning is the fact that these struggles are becoming the norm for midwives.1 The retention rate of midwives is at a crisis point.2 In 2022, there was an estimated shortage of 2,000 midwives in England.3 The number of midwives on antidepressants and anxiety medication continues to rise.1 Relying on these chemical mood enhancers just to get through the day can feel dehumanising.4
