Abstract

AbstractA lab scale X‐ray tomography scanner is used to quantify the morphological details of crack tip regions of Kahn tear tested AA7050 aluminum samples subjected to different hot rolling conditions. The 3D crack tip images show distinctive differences in crack tip morphology (such as orientation and shape of the crack tip, bridging ligaments, crack opening distance, and plastic deformation around the crack tip) for samples with different fracture toughness. Quantification of the observations showed that the fracture toughness of AA7050 sample is directly related to the crack tip opening angle measured with computer tomography method.
