Abstract
The article aims to present the linguistic creation of Stefan Więckowski in the short story "The Last Soldier of the Republic of Poland" by Eugeniusz Paukszta. Lexemes, word combinations and stylistic figures, forming a linguistic portrait of the main character, were extracted from the analyzed story and subsequently underwent semantic stratification according to the modified proposal of Teresa Skubalanka to reveal: the character’s names, appearance, behaviour and emotions. The analysis of the language material shows that the repertoire of names is not extensive; however, by using them, the writer characterizes Więckowski as an individual who performs two life roles: a soldier and a man. The identity of the character is reflected through his participation in the domestic (his, man), local (comrade) and national (Pole) community circles.
