Abstract
If creating theatre is like writing on water, then lighting design produces the shadow that reveals fleetingly what we have written. In the last part of the twentieth century, there was a master light designer who not only created some of the most memorable productions in the Canadian theatre but also developed a unique philosophy of repertory stage lighting. At the Shaw Festival, there is a scholarship for design apprenticeship in his name. His contemporaries have strong, vivid memories of his work and style.
