Abstract

In this work an approach is used to obtain a planing boat's water pressure distribution in order to calculate the dynamic lift ratio in planing condition. The water pressure distribution and the dynamic lift ratio are applicable to the initial design phase of a planing boat having vee- or wave- shaped bottom with chine. A boat gets larger dynamic lift when speed increases in planing condition. The lift causes hull to rise and have smaller water surface area. The longitudinal dynamic lift distribution is determined by the momentum change theory considering wetted wedge's spread. The numerical results are in a good agreement with model test data and actual craft records.
