Abstract
The definition of lexical meaning in the Northern Dialect (DU) has caused problems for users due to the existence of confusion due to the dexterity of the meaning, the circularity of the meaning and the overlapping of meanings in interpreting an entry/subentry and phrase. This study will identify DU entries that have ambiguity in meaning based on the definition in the Kamus Dewan Fourth Edition (KD4), describe DU entries that have ambiguity in meaning based on the definition in KD4 using the Meaning Component Analysis Theory (1975) and formulate a new definition of DU entries in KD4. This study will use a total of 30 staff members from the Federal Agricultural Marketing Board (FAMA) by using a group sampling method based on criteria that have been set such as age, academic level, state of birth, and service level. Respondents will be interviewed in groups according to state related to DU entries taken in KD4 to obtain data and the data will be analyzed using theory. The interview process takes between 15 and 20 minutes. The results of the study found that there is a difference in the meaning received by users regarding the DU entry referred to in KD4 with the meaning given by native DU speakers. Therefore, it is hoped that this study can provide an opportunity for future researchers to carry out studies related to lexical meaning, especially in the Malay dialect.
