Abstract

The mental mapping of an ideal territory for the nation is a classical aspect in the ideas of the modern state. The elasticity of the Polish boundaries and the general instability of Polish sovereignty during the 20th Century may explain the remarkable regional specificity in the building of a national identity in Poland.While its chronology follows the great historical breaks of the period, the article gives a perspective not only on the changes, but also on the continuities and traditions in the political culture, the emotional connexions and the geographical imagination that can be seen through the analysis of the Polish Western territories and the German-polish neighbourhood since 1900.
