Abstract

Most countries make serious efforts to reduce the frequency of imposing imprisonment sanctions recently. The overpopulation of prisons is also a current issue to solve in the Hungarian system of law enforcement. Since build new prisons is extremely expensive, one supportable way of reducing prison population is not to impose imprisonment. Accordingly, researches about alternative sanctions that replace imprisonment are not only up-to-date but also necessary from practical aspects. The huge number of alternative sanctions make it an hopeless attempt to present all the alternative sanctions in one study. Consequently, after a brief historical introduction, we offer general overview of alternative sanctions, then we focus on the regulations of community service.
