Abstract
The Guitarrillas of the north of the deparment of Potosí (Bolivia): Morphology, Use and Symbolics Abstract This study presents a cordophone's family regrouped by the name of "guitarrilla", which has a deep and ancestral cultural significance, at morphological, functional and symbolical levels. This original group of instruments, is closely related to the earth, water and fertility cults, which are major elements of the andean pantheon, particularly in the native societies of the north of the department of Potosi (Bolivia). The "guitarrillas", traditional instruments of the rain season, belong more specifically to the Quechua identity, as most of the bolivian cordophones. However, at a higher level, they have to be considered as a reflection of the andean culture symbiosis, which characterizes the present traditional bolivian society. This group of concepts confers to this kind of instrument a social function, which demonstrates that music is part of the daily life of the rural bolivian society.
