Abstract

Maritime flows of bulk solid cargos in the Caribbean Basin. The Caribbean Bassin is one of the major maritime crossroads in the Third World, whose activity is dominated by oil and mineral traffic. In a general situation where staple commodity producing countries contest the present state of affairs, the Caribbean Basin offers an example of the ways and limits of this challenge. In the mining sector (bauxite, alumina, iron ore) production and sales have greatly decreased ; big changes in the aluminium market have been prejudicial to the Caribbean area more than changes in the venezualian iron ore market. Caribbean interests have no real hold on mineral transportation ; there are not enrough Caribbean bulk carriers, in spite of the encouraging example of venezualian iron ore.
