Abstract

Anand Grover is a designated Senior Advocate, practicing in the Supreme Court of India, the Director of the HIV/AIDS Unit of Lawyer’s Collective (India), and the former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health (2008–2014). In his regular practice, Mr. Grover has successfully argued cases in diverse areas of law including constitutional, administrative, commercial, criminal, tort, labour and industrial, family, matrimonial, probate and succession, intellectual property, arbitration, health and LGBTI issues. He has appeared before practically all of the High Courts in India and also argues regularly before the Supreme Court of India. Mr. Grover has argued several landmark cases in the field of public interest and human rights law, including mass eviction cases (Olga Tellis & Ors v. Bombay Municipal Council ), environmental cases (the Bhopal Gas Disaster case; the Goa Zuari Agrochemicals case), sexual discrimination and harassment cases (Shehnaaz Mudhbatakal v. Saudi Arabian Airlines; the Air India Air Hostess case), animal rights cases (the Camel case), and labour rights cases (the Kamani Tubes Ltd case; the KMA case; the Garware Nylons case). In 1981, along with Indira Jaising, he founded the Lawyers Collective with a view of “meeting the unmet legal needs of the poor.” Mr. Grover currently oversees the work of The Lawyers Collective HIV/AIDS Unit (the “Unit”) in its Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore offices.
