Abstract
There is much debate regarding the method and the outcome of preparing student nurses for clinical practice. Ever since nurse education moved into higher education (HE) there have been comments about the suitability of the system. The critics generally seem to follow one of the following themes: a) nurses should be educated at a higher level, but there should be more practical training in clinical skills, b) bring back schools of nursing attached to big hospitals and universities so students can find some closer affiliation and reality to their nursing care, c) the system of clinical support for student nurses (i.e. mentorship) is not working and needs revising, and d) professional nursing itself is to blame because there are not enough experts in clinical nursing to influence students.
