Abstract

This article assesses the results of the research carried out in the secondary town of Viuz-Faverges, recognized as the mansio Casuaria of the Antonine Itinerary. The site, occupied since the final Hallstatt, was the scene of the development of a town in the lst century AD. Its emergence can be associated to the significant level of passage on the Roman road that joined Italy to the German regions and North Gaul. The article puts forward the question of the part played by a particular road in the development of a town. It also emphasizes certain specificities particular to this mountain town, especially the presence of an important sanctuary located near the gathered settlement and of a large villa one kilometre away from the sanctuary.
