Abstract

«Death to the legate and those of Languedoc ! » With such cries Bologna rebelled against cardinal Bertrand of Pouget in 1334. The research on the networks the latter used to bring the city into line is hindered by the incomplete nature of the sources, but can still draw on four accounting books to throw light on various moments of the legation. They notably provide information on how and where officers were recruited. We first analyze the lines of action of the legation and objectives of the cardinal ; then we try and discern the main areas which were put to use. At the beginning of the considered period, officers were predominantly recruited from the Southwest of present day France and from the lands of the Crown of Aragon, but after the defeat at Vaprio, recruitments from Lombardy and the Holy Roman Empire territories grew in numbers. This evolution can be explained in relation to John XXII’ s line of action : after leaning heavily on the Angevin networks, he had to turn to the ecclesial institution and its resources. While the pope eagerly accepted offers of service from Flanders and German Rhine area, his attitude shows a real mistrust towards the Crown of France. This element casts doubts on the idea, proposed fifty years ago, that John XXII had tried to set up a kingdom in Lombardy under the French king’s influence.
