Abstract

The Monastery of the Friar Preachers in Perpignan. Although it was located in Catalonia, county of Rousillon, the monastery in Perpignan belonged to the Province of Provence until the 15th century. Becoming Royal Foundation in 1243 thanks to Jaume I, Count of Barcelona-King of Aragon, the monastery was used as burial ground for the Princes of Majorca and nestled the relics of St John-the-Baptist. This explains the size, the grandeur and the beauty of the medieval edifice, which is to this day still largely preserved. The monument is a major work and an essential landmark in the knowledge of the art of building and decorating Dominican monasteries in the Province of Provence during the 13th and 14th centuries.
