Abstract

Fused deposition Modelling (FDM) or Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) is an Additive Manufacturing process that uses production-grade thermoplastic materials to produce prototypes and in-use parts layer by layer. This technology is widely regarded for its accurate feature details in produced parts and its excellent strength-to-weight ratio. However, this manufacturing process has some issues like excess material deposition while printing, which may lead to uneven shape. Warping is another problem causing the material to shrink during the cooling process. To rectify the defects, a profile monitoring method is developed along with a machine vision system using an image processing technique to detect any abnormalities that occur during the printing process.
